The Jets have reportedly opened up almost $12 million in cap space ahead of their season opener by restructuring linebacker C.J. Mosley’s contract.
ESPN’s Field Yates reports that the Jets converted $14.88 million of Mosley’s base salary into a signing bonus, which adds two void years to Mosley’s deal but frees up $11.904 million in cap space for this upcoming season.
Mosley is under contract through 2024 and the Jets had an opt-out after this season, which would have given then $3 million in dead cap but freed up $15.5 million in space if they used it.
Now, Mosley has a cap hit of $5.6 million this year, with $21.46 million in 2023 and $21.45 million in 2024, and his 2025 and 2026 void years would cost the Jets $2.96 million each season – but cutting him in either of the 2023 or 2024 seasons will leave them with $9-12 million in dead cap.

Mosley signed a five-year, $85 million deal with $51 million guaranteed in 2019, but played just two games in 2019 around a pair of groin injuries and missed all of 2020 after opting out due to COVID-19 concerns.
Last season, though, Mosley appeared in 16 games and recorded 168 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles.
