In addition to taking a clear shot at Zach Wilson, Jets owner Woody Johnson also put his head coach and general manager on notice when speaking at Thursday's NFL Honors event.
Johnson made it clear that, while he declared their jobs safe before the end of last season, Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas have little room for error in 2024.
"The discussions I’ve had in the last couple of months, they’ve seen me about as mad as I can be, with what was going on with the offense particularly," Johnson said, via Brian Costello of the New York Post. "We’ve got all this talent and we’ve got to deploy talent properly. I think they all got the message. This is it. This is the time to go. We’ve got to produce this year. We have to produce this year."
"This is it" certainly seems to suggest that there better be clear improvements in the form of wins in 2024, or else Johnson could be looking for a new regime to lead the way after what has been three straight double-digit losing seasons in Saleh's tenure, while Douglas drafting Wilson No. 2 overall proved to be one of the all-time draft busts.
So, does Johnson's warning mean it's playoffs or bust in 2024? Johnson said he's not a "playoff mandate" guy, but...
"We have to do a lot better than seven games," Johnson said, via Costello. "We have to do a lot better than seven games. We have to definitely."
