Joe Benigno called in to Boomer and Gio on Tuesday morning to clear the air on his comments about Robert Saleh not liking Zach Wilson.
Immediately, Joe made it clear that he misinterpreted the text message from the Jets head coach, and walked back the idea that Saleh doesn’t like his former No. 2 overall pick.
“Total misinterpretation by me of what he said,” Joe said. “I was wrong about that. What he was basically saying was, ‘All this time killing Zach and wanting him benched, and now you want me to play him?’
“That’s my bad. That’s my fault. That’s the story.”
Joe made waves with his comments on Monday, as drama swirled about Wilson reportedly being reluctant to take back the starting job with the Jets as their season spirals out of control. Joe said he and Saleh had never gone over any “ground rules” regarding what can be shared about their texts to each other, and that he hasn’t heard anything from him regarding putting an end to their texting relationship because of Monday’s misinterpretation.
“I shouldn’t have done it,” Joe said. “I don’t know what his real relationship is with Zach. I’m not there. I’m not in the locker room. But I totally misinterpreted what he said.
“I was wrong about it. I am fortunate enough to be able to go back and forth with him on a regular basis…I guess only time will tell. There’s nothing else I can say. I made a mistake here, something I shouldn’t have done.”
