Mekhi Becton is entering a crucial season for the Jets, as head coach Robert Saleh told reporters earlier in the offseason that a starting tackle position is not guaranteed for the former 11th overall pick, after he missed nearly all of last season with a knee injury.
General manager Joe Douglas, not long after Saleh’s comments, said that he does envision Becton being a starter, but the lineman is not in attendance at the Jets voluntary mini-camp.
“Mekhi is not here, Mekhi is back in Dallas,” Douglas confirmed on Thursday. “These are voluntary.”
Becton has been seen in viral videos doing some impressive offseason workouts, like walking back and forth across a gym while carrying at least 400 pounds, but after being limited to just a few snaps last season, and with George Fant impressing as a replacement, many expected Becton to be with the team as much as possible to solidify a spot on the offensive line. But as Douglas said, the mini-camp is voluntary, and he has been in contact with Becton’s camp as he looks to turn in a healthy 2022 season.
“In terms of Mekhi, we’ve had great dialogue and discussion back and forth with his medical team back in Dallas,” Douglas said. “So we’re on top of everything with him right now.”
