Joe Flacco on Zach Wilson: 'You can tell he loves this game'

Zach Wilson went through another heavy workout on Sunday, and after the Jets’ loss to the Dolphins, head coach Robert Saleh said that “we’ll feel him out to see where he is mentally and physically over the next two days” when asked if Wilson would be back under center in Houston next week.

Wilson has now missed four games since being injured against New England, which means he has hit the back end of his original two-to-four week prognosis timeline, and in that time, three quarterbacks have played and two have started.

The latest was Joe Flacco, a 36-year-old veteran trade acquisition who definitely doesn’t fit the Jets’ youthful vibe, but has been a great sounding board for the No. 2 overall pick.

“I laugh, because I told a couple guys that as soon as we get together it’s a million questions. It’s all good, and a lot of fun to see someone just coming into the league being eager to learn,” Flacco said when asked about Wilson on Sunday. “I don’t have all the answers and he’s different than I am, but it’s been great to be around that room to help in any way possible. You can tell he loves this game.”

Flacco is new to the Jets’ current system, having been acquired from Philadelphia after Wilson was hurt, so he hasn’t seen the rookie do anything more than run the scout team – but so far, he’s impressed.

“I haven’t really gotten a chance to see much of him physically, but the ball definitely jumps off his hand,” Flacco said. “He’s eager to learn and learn as much as he can about this game, how to play in rhythm and also be able to use the other things he does well. He’s working hard at it.”

If Wilson can’t go in Houston, chances are Flacco will probably be under center again instead of Mike White – but even if not, Flacco is preparing the same way he always does.

“Every time I take the field, I want to play my best and put my team in the best position to win,” he said. “We didn’t get it done today, but I’ll continue to do that until I’m told I’m not going to, and I’m going to enjoy it and have fun with the guys.”
