Jets owner Woody Johnson spoke to ESPN’s Dianna Russini at the NFL Honors ceremony Thursday night, and doubled down on Gang Green’s objective to add a veteran quarterback this season.
Johnson also seemed to make it clear that what Zach Wilson gave the team last season, didn’t come close to cutting it.
“The weakness was in the quarterback position,” Johnson said. “Whether it was management or whatever, everybody kind of regressed a little bit. So we’re gonna look for an experienced quarterback to come in and help us, and help develop these other young players further.
“There’s a number of them out there that look pretty good, that look really good.”
As for which quarterback it will be to take over for Wilson, Johnson wouldn’t bite on any names, but believes whoever they bring in, it will immediately make New York a much stronger team.
“I think you want the best quarterback that you can get to lead the Jets,” Johnson said. “I think with a good quarterback and our great defense - and the defense would be a lot better with a quarterback that’s actually doing it - and a good running game…it’s plug and play. I think a quarterback comes in, it’s kind of an ideal situation.”
Despite being questioned multiple times about Aaron Rodgers specifically, Johnson wouldn’t comment, but you can bet the Jets will make their push when Rodgers emerges from the darkness of his isolation.
“I can’t really talk about him, he’s a member of another club,” Johnson said. “But everybody recognizes the talent.”
