Zach Wilson takes step back in Week 14 loss: 'I gotta throw the ball better'

Zach Wilson entered Sunday’s Week 14 matchup with the Saints with some promise after earning his second NFL Rookie of the Week nod following the Jets’ loss to the Eagles last weekend.

That promise faded quickly, as the No. 2 overall pick completed just 19 of his 42 passes, finishing with 202 yards in a lopsided 30-9 loss.

“Wasn’t his cleanest game, obviously,” head coach Robert Saleh said of Wilson. “He was hindered with some drops early. Don’t know if that threw him off or not. But obviously, he’s played better in the past, and he’ll get better from it.”

Running back Ty Johnson certainly didn’t do Wilson any favors early on, dropping three passes alone in the first quarter, two of them right in his hands, while another was thrown just a bit behind him by Wilson over the middle of the field.

Overall, Wilson acknowledged that his accuracy needs to improve, but he had some positive takeaways from his latest NFL start.

“I thought as far as seeing the field and decision-making, I thought I was seeing it well,” Wilson said. “Of course there was some I want back, but I gotta throw the ball better. Gotta give guys better chances to run after the catch. Just right from the beginning, I gotta be more accurate.”

But there was plenty of reasons to be concerned regarding Wilson. He bounced multiple short passes, and even with a shorthanded offense, the overall performance was a disappointment, particularly for Wilson and his 59.8 quarterback rating.

“We've just gotta execute,” Wilson said. “Obviously just being more accurate would definitely help that number. My ability to go through my progressions and then give those guys a good chance to catch the ball and run with it. I think just with time and everybody working on their responsibility and just getting better, that number’s gonna go up.”
