Zach Wilson to start for Jets Sunday after doctors won't clear Mike White

Boomer pondered that Zach Wilson would see some playing time given Mike White’s banged-up ribs, and turns out, Wilson might wind up playing the entire game.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and confirmed by Robert Saleh, White will not be cleared by team doctors for Sunday’s critical game against the Lions, meaning Wilson, recently elevated to backup by Saleh, will get the start for the first time since Week 11.

Per Schefter, White has practiced and wants to play, but doctors will not give him the green light. White sustained a ribs injury after taking multiple heavy hits in last weekend’s loss to the Bills, but told reporters on Thursday that he planned on playing against Detroit.

Wilson was benched in favor of White after struggling badly under center this season. He completed nine of 22 passes for just 77 yards in a loss to the Patriots, where New England won 10-3 on a last-second punt return, and after Wilson bluntly dismissed the idea that he let down Gang Green’s defense, he was demoted, and hadn’t been active since. Joe Flacco had been handling backup duties.

Now, the former No. 2 overall pick will get a shot at redemption when the Jets, fighting for their playoff lives, need it most.
