Boomer: Knicks can't let Donovan Mitchell become Reggie Miller or Trae Young as series shifts to MSG

As the Knicks and Cavaliers series shifts to Madison Square Garden, Boomer is worried about a new villain introducing himself on the playoff stage.

In the 1990s, it was Michael Jordan and Reggie Miller. Two years ago, it was Trae Young. Now, Boomer says Donovan Mitchell cannot be added to that list.

“For the Knick fan and for the Knicks themselves, they can’t allow Donovan Mitchell to become Reggie Miller or Michael Jordan, or Trae Young from a couple years ago,” Boomer said. “As much as we like the local kid, we cannot allow him to come in here and drop 50 points in a playoff game.”

The storylines would write themselves, as Mitchell, a New York native, was considered a lock to be joining the Knicks in a blockbuster trade before New York backed out of trade talks, feeling the asking price was too high. Mitchell instead went to Cleveland, and now has a chance to take over and help his team take control of the series.

But, on the other side of that coin, Gio actually believes if Mitchell is going off in the points column, it might mean that the Knicks are winning the battle that matters on the scoreboard.

“I actually think the Knicks are better off if he does go for 50 points,” Gio said. “He went off offensively in game one, and the Knicks won. What happened yesterday? He was an assist machine, Darius Garland went off, and the Cavs won.

“But he’s gonna look to go crazy in [game three].”
