The Knicks have reportedly locked up another crucial bench piece as they gear up for a title defense.
According to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, Landry Shamet intends to sign a four-year, $24 million deal to stay in New York, securing a valuable sharpshooter and defender who was a key factor in the Knicks championship run. According to Ian Begley of SNY, Shamet turned down more lucrative offers to remain with the Knicks.
An unrestricted free agent, Shamet signed a veteran minimum deal entering last season, a contract that became one of the best values in basketball as Shamet emerged as a key rotation piece for first-year head coach Mike Brown. Shamet averaged 23 minutes per game and shot 39.2 percent from downtown, scoring 9.3 points per game. He missed extended time after suffering a shoulder injury for the second year in a row, but he returned and shot the lights out for an extended stretch in the postseason, highlighted by an Eastern Conference Final where he shot 12-for-13 in the four-game sweep.
Overall, the 29-year-old Shamet shot 47.5 percent from deep in the playoffs.
Shamet joins Jose Alvarado as recent members of the Knicks roster to sign new contracts, and now, all attention turns towards Mitchell Robinson, who remains unlikely to return given the money it would require and the team's commitment to staying below the second apron.
