Gio: Knicks feeling similar to Yankees teams that could never get past Astros

The Knicks kept it close before things slipped away quickly against the Warriors on Tuesday night, as Steph Curry and company ran away with the win at Madison Square Garden before New York’s five-game road trip.

The Knicks are still third in the East and one of the better teams in the NBA, but the question continues to be about the team’s ability to beat the best of the best, whether it be the beasts of their conference like the Celtics and Cavaliers, or the biggest stars in the league like Curry.

For Gio, the story is a familiar one, as he is starting to see some of the 2017-2022 Yankees in these Knicks, as those Yankee teams were never able to get past the best of the best and punch through that ALCS ceiling.

“They’re really good, and they’ve got a great player…but can you beat the Astros?” Gio said. “That’s basically what it was, and they never could.

“I feel like we’re heading in that type of collision course with the Knicks.”

Could New York be doomed to fall short against Boston and Cleveland for years to come, despite having one of the most talented starting units in the NBA? Jerry Recco thought, on paper, the Knicks had the most talented team in the East heading into the season. But they clearly haven’t looked like one of the very best with less than two months left in the season.

“You could say they’re more talented than 98 percent of the league,” Jerry said. “But it’s just not working the way we thought it would be.”
