As the Heat celebrate another trip to the NBA Finals, having now been there seven times since 2006, Boomer couldn’t help but think about the one that got away.

The one being Pat Riley, the former Knicks head coach and current Heat president who has constructed another roster on the cusp of winning it all.

“We had him here,” Boomer said. “And we let him go.”

Riley has helped four different iterations of the Heat reach the NBA Finals, consistently redeveloping the team to be contenders after he left as Knicks head coach, back when New York basketball was also seen as a regular contender.

“All he’s ever done down there is win,” Boomer said. “He knows how to get the right guys and put the right teams together. It hasn’t been a dynasty type of run, but it’s one of the best run organizations in all of sports.”
