Cam Reddish told reporters he was lifting weights on his birthday when he started getting flooded with Instagram messages earlier this month after the New York Post reported that the former first-round pick had requested a trade from the Knicks.
“What did I do now?” Reddish wondered when his phone started blowing up.
Reddish seemingly shot down the rumors on the spot, responding to a post about the trade request by saying, “When I do that? Y’all be trippin.” Knicks president Leon Rose also shot it down when asked about it by Alan Hahn in an interview on MSG last week, and now, on Wednesday, Reddish made it clear that he never asked to be traded from New York.
Reddish, a former college teammate of RJ Barrett’s and a former 10th overall pick, saw sparing minutes under Tom Thibodeau after he was acquired in a trade with the Hawks last season, averaging 14.3 minutes per game with the Knicks while averaging 6.1 points per game, both numbers down from his time with Atlanta.
Many Knicks fans clamored for Reddish and other New York youngsters to see more playing time as it became clear that the Knicks weren’t playoff bound, but many were left disappointed. As for this season, when asked about Reddish’s role, Thibodeau said, via Ian Begley of SNY, that the team is deep at wing, that no decisions have been made just yet, and, as he said many times last season, minutes will be “merit-based.”
