With Carmelo Anthony announcing his retirement on Monday, debate immediately ensued among Knicks fans whether the 10-time All-Star deserved to have his number retired by New York, and his jersey raised into the MSG rafters.
According to SNY’s Ian Begley, that is likely going to happen in the very near future.
“My guess would be that it would be [retired],” Begley said on SNY. “Prior to this announcement, just in conversations with people who would be familiar with the decision, they thought there was a momentum towards Carmelo Anthony’s No. 7 getting retired in the MSG rafters. A decision I don’t think had been made yet, but based on where the momentum was going, I would be surprised if it wasn’t retired. When they do it, I’m sure it would be sometime next year if they do it.”
Anthony won just one playoff series with the Knicks, but he represented the game’s only big star of that era to want to play for the franchise, and made the team relevant again with his arrival. While his time in New York didn’t bring the team success many expected while having one of the greatest scorers in NBA history, many point to the lack of talent around him, and the organizational discord that was still going on during Anthony’s prime.
Based on the reception Anthony got at MSG during the Knicks’ most recent playoff run, his jersey retirement would likely be well received.
