The NBA’s most frequent Christmas matchup returns this Dec. 25, as Knicks vs. Sixers at MSG is one of five games on this year’s Christmas Day slate according to NBA insider Shams Charania:
James Harden may have spoiled the news earlier this week, Tweeting “Christmas in the Garden!” before the full reported slate came out.
The Knicks have long been a fixture on the NBA’s Christmas schedule, as this will be their 55th Dec. 25 game. They are just 23-31 in the first 54, but their 23 wins are second only to the Lakers (who have the second-most games played on Christmas, this year marking their 49th) and they are on a Dec. 25 winning streak, having defeated Atlanta 101-87 last Christmas at MSG.
As mentioned, Knicks vs. Sixers is the league’s most frequent Christmas matchup between active teams, this year’s tilt marking the 13th time the two have hooked up on Santa’s favorite holiday. The most recent was in 2017, when the Sixers topped the ‘Bockers 105-98 at MSG, and Philly leads the holiday series 7-5.
The Sixers are tied for third on the all-time Christmas Day wins list, their current 18 victories matching Sacramento behind the Lakers and Knicks, and their last XMas tilt was a 121-109 victory over the Bucks in Philly in 2019.
For those in metro NYC, this slate also snaps a two-year run of the Brooklyn Nets playing on Christmas Day, as the team defeated the Celtics on Dec. 25, 2020, and the Lakers last Christmas, both games on the road.
