Richard Jefferson, known for his playful jabs at the Knicks and their fanbase, was in that spotlight again earlier this month when he was seen on video responding to a Knicks fan asking why Jefferson hates his team.
Jefferson responded that he does not in fact hate the Knicks, and on his latest episode of the Road Trippin’ podcast with Channing Frye and Allie Clifton, the former Nets star explained the interaction with that fan in Los Angeles.
“With all due respect, you guys are the fifth seed and you're taking victory laps. Have some self-respect, bro. Have some f----g self-respect,” Jefferson said. “You guys are the New York Knicks. And that’s the thing, we’re not talking bad about you because you’re not 12th or making any silly moves. There’s no personal shots at the Knicks unless it’s joking. They’re like, ‘Oh, we’re winning, we won eight in a row!’ Yeah, you won eight in a row and you guys are the fifth seed.
“Knicks fans are so unrealistic with the way they approach it. But their team is great. I have no problem with being overly excited and excited about what they got going on.”
New York has been one of the top teams in the league in the calendar year, but a slow start and a stacked Eastern Conference does indeed only have the Knicks at the fifth seed as the regular season nears a close. As things stand now, the ‘Bockers would meet the fourth-seeded Cavaliers in the first round, and all playful trolling aside, Jefferson believes the Knicks would be a problem for Cleveland.
“I really believe if the Knicks get the Cavs, the Knicks probably will be favored,” Jefferson said. “And that part is a little scary if you’re a Cavs fan.”
