Tiki says Tom Thibodeau firing is matter of when, not if: 'I don't think he can coach this team'

Tiki has seen enough on Tom Thibodeau on the sidelines at Madison Square Garden, and is convinced that he is not the answer to bring the Knicks to the next level.

He also believes the New York front office believes the same, and Thibodeau will be out sooner than later.

"I don't think he can coach this team," Tiki said when asked by Tierney on Thursday's show. "The question isn't whether he should be fired, the question is when he will be fired. That's the question."

Thibodeau's Knicks blew another 20-point lead on Wednesday night, losing their 12th of the last 15, and have sank deeper out of the playoff picture as they've mercifully hit the All-Star break. Tiki believes the break can provide a time for the team to reassess and see that it is not making steps forward with Thibodeau leading the way, despite the job he did just a season ago.

"When are they gonna move on and realize that whether it's the talent, or the guys not listening, or lack of play-calling ability…the lack of developing young players, what are you getting out of this team with Tom Thibodeau coaching the way he is coaching?" Tiki said. "You're getting nothing.

"I don't know how you watch this team and see the fanbase is so increasingly frustrated with the same thing happening over and over."

Thibodeau isn't completely at fault. The front office's offseason moves haven't panned out, and Julius Randle just recently started playing closer to his 2020-21 self. But Thibodeau's hesitancy to switch up his rotations and the team's infuriating tendency to come apart at the seams in late and close games is enough for Tiki to want a new face coaching the 'Bockers.

"It can't just be on the players…especially with how you watch how these games end, you know it's not just on the players," Tiki said. "So it's either the coach not putting them in the right positions, or the players not listening to the coach. And either one of those is egregious enough that the coach can't be there anymore."
