The Mets have been decimated by injuries to their pitching staff, and as a result, will be looking in on a former All-Star and divisional rival.
According to Audacy MLB insider Jon Heyman, New York will be in attendance when lefty Cole Hamels puts on a showcase on Friday in Texas, as the 37-year-old looks to find his way onto a big-league club.
Hamels pitched just 3.1 innings last season with the Braves after signing a one-year, $18 million deal, but was productive in 2019 with the Cubs, pitching to a 3.81 ERA over 141.2 innings. He was an All-Star as recently as 2016 with the Rangers, and earned three All-Star nods with the Phillies, where he began his career back in 2006.
The Mets have already lost Joey Lucchesi for the season, while Carlos Carrasco, David Peterson, Noah Syndergaard and Corey Oswalt are all on the IL as well.
The Yankees will reportedly also be in attendance, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, as the Yanks’ rotation has struggled of late and is still without Corey Kluber and Luis Severino.
The Phillies will also be looking on, potentially setting up a reunion after Hamels pitched in Philadelphia for 10 seasons, winning NLCS and World Series MVP in 2008.
