Alex Rodriguez lost out in his bid to own the Mets to Steve Cohen, but the former Yankees star revealed what some of his vision would have been had he won the bid, particularly with the coaching staff.
“I think Steven Cohen is doing a terrific jo with this franchise,” Rodriguez said on the New York Post’s “The Show” podcast. “It’s good to know he had a lot of similar thoughts in analytics and leadership. Buck Showalter was going to be my guy. David Cone would have been my pitching coach. I would have definitely had Al Leiter involved. I would have tried to bring Keith Hernandez back [out of the booth] as my favorite player.”
Rodriguez has since turned his attention to the NBA, becoming part-owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves but his pursuit of the Mets was partially driven by his fandom for the team growing up.
“Look, I have special place in my heart with New York Mets. I grew up a New York Met fan,” he said. “That was a really big deal for me. Of Course, being in a market like New York.”
Rodriguez made it sound like if he were to try to own, it would only be from a handful of franchises.
“I think there’s 7-8 teams worth having and taking a run at,” he said. “Obviously, you got the big seven – Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, the Cubs, Yankees, Mets, there’s 7-8 really, really interesting from a business proposition. I think it would have worked well [with the Mets], but everything happens for a reason. The Mets are in a great place, so are the Yankees, and we may have a Subway Series rematch from 2000.”
