Just a normal Wednesday morning show, as Joe Benigno and Jerry Recco were breaking down the most-likely playoff-deficient New York baseball scene, and giving ideas of what the offseason might look like…and that’s when Joe Benigno, No. 1 Mets fan, went OFF on Ronny Mauricio still being at Triple-A.
“HOW IS THIS GUY NOT UP HERE? Alvarez is here, Vientos is here, Baty they gave a real good sht – where is Mauricio? All he does is tear it up!” Joe said after Jerry Recco referenced another strong night for Ronny on Tuesday. “All I hear is he’s not ready or can’t play the field, well how about this: he should’ve been up here two months ago, and should have been the DH instead of this absolute stiff in Daniel Vogelbach!”
“You can talk about Scherzer and Verlander and everything, but that’s the biggest swing and a miss the Mets made, is not filling the DH spot,” Jerry replied. “We’ve been talking about ti since this time last year.”
“They went for Vogelbach and Darin Ruf, but Ruf was a disaster and Vogelbach isn’t any good…why couldn’t Mauricio be the DH? What is going on here?” Joe shot back. “There is a lot of nonsense that goes on with this organization behind the scenes. I thought it was really gonna change when Steve Cohen got here, and it hasn’t.”
Joe was talking to someone who covers the Mets, and that source told him Cohen deserves the benefit of the doubt so far…but Joe isn’t feeling it.
“He doesn’t deserve nothing! They won 101 games last year and then stuck it up our rear end!” Joe screamed. “All I heard about was his money, and a year and a half later, we’re punting the season and changing direction – who’s kidding who? You’re not going to contend this year, and you haven’t won the World Series in 37 years!”
Jerry wants to wait and see how the offseason shakes out before saying the Mets won’t contend, because he doesn’t buy for a second Cohen won’t put his money up until he doesn’t – but Steve did always say replenishing the farm was a priority.
“They’re doing that, and I do feel like he has a vision for what he wants them to be, and they’re laying the foundation for that,’ Jerry said. “I don’t believe until I see it that they’ll go through an offseason without making a big move. I know what they did this summer, but I don’t think they’re punting 2024. Now, if we’re sitting here in March and this team is what it is now, then you’re right.”
Joe doesn’t trust it, but only time will tell – and you can tell by listening to the entire clip above, and below, another where Joe goes off on Buck Showalter!
