The Mets announced Thursday afternoon that general manager Billy Eppler has resigned from his role.
"Billy Eppler led this team through a 101-win season and postseason berth last year and he will be missed,” Mets owner Steve Cohen said in a statement. “We accepted Billy’s resignation today as he decided it is in everyone’s best interest to fully hand over the leadership of Baseball Operations to David Stearns. On behalf of the Mets organization, we wish him all the best."
Stearns was introduced as Mets president of baseball operations on Monday, a position Cohen had been longing to fill for years. With Stearns' hiring, many wondered what Eppler's role would be as GM moving forward.
Eppler was hired after the 2021 season, and helped sign big-name free agents like Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, while re-signing Brandon Nimmo and Edwin Diaz to big contracts.
Eppler said in a statement that he wanted Stearns to have a "clean slate," and wishes the Mets organization, "nothing but the best."
