Boomer & Gio's main takeaway from Juan Soto press conference: He was always taking highest offer
Fans and analysts across the baseball world dissected Juan Soto's comments at his introductory press conference on Thursday, as Soto talked about family and long-term organizational vision as reasons why he decided to sign a 15-year deal with the Mets.
But Boomer and Gio agree that those were just facades to mask the real reason for his decision, the paycheck.
"What I heard was...this was a guy who was waiting a very long time for free agency," Gio said. "The Mets had the highest offer...and he decided on that.
"I don't think he looked at the Yankees in a negative way...I really believe that Juan Soto had waited all this time for this moment, and he was gonna take the best offer."
Boomer was in full agreement, and didn't believe much stock needed to be taken into Soto not speaking to his former Yankee teammates since the season ended, or reports of the Yanks not offering Soto a free suite for his family. It was mainly the fact that he will be paid a lot more money in Queens with Steve Cohen.
"He took the most money, folks," Boomer said. "He's making $61 million a year in the first five years of this contract, when you take into account the $75 million check Steve Cohen handed him yesterday.
"I do believe that he enjoyed his time with the Yankees...but the Yankees just couldn't match what the Mets could."
Hal Steinbrenner doesn't have the wealth that Cohen has, nor does anyone else in the sport. If he did, Gio believes Soto would have put the Yankee pinstripes back on during a Thursday press conference.
"I'm telling you, if the deals were flipped and Hal Steinbrenner offered what Steve Cohen offered," Gio said. "He'd be a Yankee."
