As expected, Mets reliever Drew Smith was issued his 10-game suspension after he was ejected from Tuesday's game following a sticky substance check by the umpiring crew.
Smith, who emphatically opposed the umpire's ruling, is the second Mets pitcher to receive that suspension this season, joining Max Scherzer on that list.
Boomer says two suspensions is way too many, and Buck Showalter needs to step in and do something about it.
"What the hell is going on with guys getting suspended?" Boomer said. "Hey Buck, control the team! Tell them they can't use the sticky stuff!
"That's your team. Guys listen to the manager. Stop using the sticky stuff. Whatever they're doing, they're doing something."
Umpire Bill Miller told reporters after the ejection that Smith's hands were "too sticky," regardless of what substance it was on his hands. Boomer says Showalter needs to be more active in curtailing the stickiness of his pitchers' hands to avoid these kind of ejections and subsequent suspensions.
"It's not a crazy umpire that's saying it," Boomer said. "I told you what he said after the game…I'm just saying. You got all these other guys that are into it as well, and these other umpires are into it, and they're like, 'You're outta here.' This is the second pitcher that has been suspended for 10 days, and that leaves the bullpen shorthanded."
