Boomer: Mets need to send down Brett Baty

Brett Baty went hitless for the sixth straight game on Sunday, going 0-for-2 with a pair of walks to drop his season average down to .216.

Baty, the hopeful third baseman of the future for the Mets, hasn’t looked the part in 2023, posting a .620 OPS with little flashes of star potential along the way, as he has also had his share of struggles defensively.

With the Mets officially in a lost season, prioritizing the future, Boomer says it would be best for Baty’s development if he played the rest of the season in the minors.

“Brett Baty needs to be sent down,” Boomer said. “He’s hit the rookie wall, as they say. It happens in every sport. Very few rookies make it an entire season without a major slump…and if he stays here, and he keeps getting put in a position to fail, will he ever believe he can do it?”

It led Boomer to wonder if Baty really can be what the team hopes, and be a next David Wright to hold down the hot corner for years to come. This season’s struggles have at least put a dent in Jerry’s confidence that Baty will be that player.

“I don’t know,” Jerry said. “I don’t know if Brett Baty is the third baseman of the future or not.”
