Pete Alonso didn't want to talk about a potential contract extension, telling reporters on Wednesday that he wasn't comfortable with the topic, despite it being a large talking point in Mets land after Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo were locked up long term.
For Boomer, hearing Alonso politely turn aside contractual questions and keep his focus on the upcoming season is another reason why the Mets homegrown slugger is so easy to root for.
"That guy is a ray of sunshine," Boomer said. "Every time you hear that guy talk, even when he's in the middle of a slump. Ray of sunshine right there."
Gio agrees, and says Alonso, even after just four seasons, is already among the best position players in Mets history, and if he is indeed signed to an extension before becoming a free agent in 2025, he will be on his way to becoming the best.
"One of the best position players in this franchise's rich history.
Already," Gio said. "They really haven't had a lot of great, homegrown position players, but he's right in that mix."
