Keith Hernandez was put in the books (or on the wall of Mets retired numbers), and now, the focus shifts to wondering who is next.
Several names have been bandied about, but on Monday's Tiki & Tierney show, BT, flying solo, asked producer Pete Hoffman about his thoughts. Hoff mentioned an idea of Doc and Straw going in together (which would never happen just for gate purposes), and of course believes David Wright will get his No, 5 retired sooner than later, too.
And then, there was another odd one he floated…Carlos Beltran?
"Get the hell out of here," BT shouted immediately.
Pete thinks he was "one of the best Mets to ever wear the jersey and they need to build the history," but BT isn't feeling it…and then Hoff tried to invoke the Yankees' slew of retired numbers, and that just set Brandon off.
"You have to make sure the history is good!" BT said. "Which of the numbers the Yankees retired was less impactful than Beltran's time in Queens? I'm not saying there's none, but when the Yankees retire a number, they retire them because they deserve it!"
Hoff thinks Beltran does deserve it, and BT said he "won't scream and shout" if it happens…but before he looked up the numbers, Tierney had an idea that would satisfy Hoff's request and his own ears.
"If the Mets retiring his number means Beltran can stop doing Yankees games, I'm all for it!"
That drew a belly laugh from Dov Kramer, who is a tough nut to crack under any circumstances, so that's how you KNOW it was a burn!
