Jeff McNeil became the third Mets batter hit by a pitch during the two-game Subway Series in the Bronx, as he was plunked by a Carlos Rodon fastball on Wednesday night.
Buck Showalter was asked if the Mets have thought about retaliating, especially after setting a league record for HBPs last season, and have been hit frequently of late not long after Pete Alonso was shelved with a wrist injury after being hit by a pitch against Charlie Morton and the Braves.
When responding to the question, Showalter didn't seem particularly motivated to seek out any kind of payback.
"That type of stuff, we know if it was the case, I certainly wouldn't talk about it publicly," Showalter said. "If it's not intentional, why are we doing it? So two wrongs make a right?"
McNeil acknowledged after the game that he knew it wasn't intentional by Rodon, and it seems if the consensus is that there was no intent, the Mets don't seem interested in deliberately sending a response.
"I've been on both sides of it," Showalter said. "It's certainly something we talk about internally a lot, but it's certainly not something I'm going to voice here."
