Buck Showalter found out he was suspended from Billy Eppler: 'I thought he was kidding'

Buck Showalter found out he had been suspended for one game less than an hour before his Mets were to begin their series against the Braves on Monday.

"I found out around 6:20-ish," Showalter said before Tuesday's doubleheader. "Billy [Eppler] came in, I thought he was kidding. What are you gonna do?"

Showalter was suspended after Yoan Lopez threw near Kyle Schwarber twice, then hit Alec Bohm during the weekend series against the Phillies. Showalter repeatedly told MLB Network's Brian Kenny on Monday that the pitch that hit Bohm was a changeup, and it was not intentional. But he would not go into details as to what MLB's explanation was for the suspension.

"I don't think they want me broadcasting that," Showalter said. "I talked to Billy, so obviously, I made a call, tried to see what my options were."

Turns out, that phone call was his appeal, so he quickly served his suspension, and the Mets lost Monday night, falling to 0-2 without their manager this season (he missed a game earlier this season for a medical procedure).

"I was told that was my appeal, the phone call," Showalter said. "They have a committee that looks at those things. It was all based on umpire reports after the fact."
