Tylor Megill certainly didn’t look like his typical self on Wednesday, allowing eight runs in 1.1 innings to the Nationals after coming into the outing with a 2.43 ERA.
Some pondered if Megill was tipping his pitches, including Todd Zeile on the SNY broadcast. The question was brought up to Buck Showalter, who wouldn’t rule anything out.
“That’s always the conspiracy theory,” Showalter said. “Everybody talks about it constantly and there’s no secrets that it’s something we’ve looked at since spring training and we look at it with all our pitchers.
“Some guys go through periods where they’re doing some things and you correct it. But I’m certainly going to talk about everything that might be a possibility, but we always look at those things.”
Of course, while the question of pitch tipping always arises in an uncharacteristically bad outing, Showalter also acknowledges that on some nights, you just don’t have it.
Megill certainly didn’t on Wednesday.
“He’s pitched so well for us so we’ll give him a pass tonight and he’ll learn from it and work on some things,” Showalter said. “Sometimes the other team’s just good and sometimes you just make bad pitches.”
