The Mets have now been held without a run for two straight games following Tuesday's 9-0 loss to the Brewers, only magnifying concerns that many had when it came to the potency of the team's lineup after not finishing a deal for Carlos Correa in the offseason.
But Buck Showalter is not among that group worried about his team's offensive production, and expects to see a breakout soon, especially when considering the veterans in the lineup that have yet to find their way.
"It's a well-seasoned group," Showalter said. "That's gonna be something that will work its way out. I've got a lot of confidence. We're six games into the season, we got a lot of guys with a good track record that will continue to do that.
"We've just run into some good pitching early, fighting our way through all the smoke and the lights blinking and everything else that's in the big leagues nowadays."
The Mets are currently tied with the Diamondbacks for the third worst team OPS in all of baseball, in front of only the lowly Royals and Tigers. It has only been six games, but the offense, especially the bottom half of the lineup, was expected to be a potential problem in 2023, and it has been so far, while needed bats like Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso have yet to get rolling. The Mets could use that sooner than later, as they have hit just three home runs this season, also the third lowest mark in the league, and haven't been many signs that a breakout is around the corner.
