C-Mac: It has to be Pete Alonso's turn to heat up as other Mets bats cool off
The Mets offense has cooled off, even against a dreadful pitching staff like the Rockies, and needed a clutch ninth-inning hit from Francisco Lindor to get the win on Wednesday night.
If New York's lineup is going to reach its full potential, or continue to make up ground in the Wild Card race, it will need more from Pete Alonso, who C-Mac says doesn't seem to be aware that the Mets need him to break out.
"The minute he was critiqued, he gave you his numbers and his value," C-Mac said in reference to Alonso's viral comments about his home run pace and All-Star selection. "It was almost as if he was in the middle of an arbitration hearing, instead of just saying 'Yeah, I have to be better.'
"They need him. This offense couldn't get anything going against one of the worst bullpens in baseball for seven innings, and 2-3 innings the night before that."
As some Mets bats have cooled off, C-Mac says it's long past due that Alonso starts carrying the offense like he is capable of, but there doesn't seem to be many signs that such a hot streak is coming.
"You can't expect Vientos - who has cooled off - to constantly be great," C-Mac said. "You can't expect Lindor…he can't be one of the best hitters in baseball all season. Nimmo has cooled off…at some point, it's Pete Alonso's turn.
"Clearly, it's weighing on him."
