C-Mac: Mets could compete in 2024 without sacrificing future, but don't seem interested

C-Man understand the desire for a team like the Mets to rebuild from within and set themselves up for sustained contention, but he believes there is a way to do that while also competing in 2024.

He just doesn't believe David Stearns and company are interested in doing that.

"I'm sure Stearns is as bright as everyone thinks he is," C-Mac said. "But don't lie to me about 'We expect this team to contend,' because you don't. If they do, great, but that is so far down the list of what the Mets are trying to do. That's fine, if you believe in that.

"Maybe three years down the line, the Mets will be so far better for it now. Maybe. But there are things they can do right now that don't impact the plan."

The Mets didn't seem to have much interest in Justin Turner or Jorge Soler, who have since signed elsewhere, but C-Mac wants to know how signing a DH like J.D. Martinez to a short-term deal would impact the team's long-term plans.

"You need a bat. You need an accomplished bat in the middle of this lineup desperately, if you want to contend this year," C-Mac said. "It doesn't feel like the Mets want to do that."
