Amid reports that the Phillies offered Yoshinobu Yamamoto more money than any other team earlier this offseason, C-Mac says it highlights a recent trend that could spell trouble for Steve Cohen and the Mets.
"Back to back years now, two of the biggest free agents turned down the highest contract offer," C-Mac said. "The Padres made a bigger offer to Judge, he stays with the Yankees, and now we're finding out that Yamamoto turned down money to go kind of where he wanted to. Just looking at, not the necessarily the Pete Alonso situation, but just the advantage you think you have with Steve Cohen, and you are seeing that players are turning down the most money to go where they wanna go. So now it's not only and that's what having years like this scare me because not only do I need to be the richest man in the room. I need to have an appealing place to sell for a while.
"So Steve Cohen is gonna say, well, I have the most money Met fans are gonna say, oh yeah, sure. Well, you also gotta say here's a place to come play, you want to play here, because right now what's selling the Mets?"
So, as the Mets stand pat this winter and wait for next offseason, C-Mac says Cohen's riches does not guarantee that New York will clean up in the free agent market.
"If you have back-to-back years of underachieving baseball," C-Mac said. "How do you sell Juan Soto on Queens?"
