Carlos Carrasco's first official start as a Met will come in New York...only in Brooklyn, not Queens.
The Brooklyn Cyclones, New York's High-A affiliate, announced via Twitter on Wednesday that Carrasco will begin a rehab assignment on Thursday night, when the Cyclones are home against the Jersey Shore BlueClaws at 7 p.m.
Carrasco threw a live batting practice session this past weekend, which Mets manager Luis Rojas said was another encouraging step toward the 34-year-old's debut with the team. Carrasco was brought over in the offseason in the trade for Francisco Lindor, but has yet to appear for the organization in any capacity due to elbow soreness in spring training, and later a torn hamstring suffered during conditioning drills on his way back from that elbow soreness.
Carrasco's return was repeatedly pushed back as strength tests on his hamstring weren't bringing back the desired results for the Mets, but he has gradually worked his way toward a rehab assignment after throwing on flat ground, on a slight slope and eventually from the rubber.
Rojas said Carrasco could join the Mets as early as after one or two rehab outings, and he doesn't have to be built up to a full workload on his assignment before making his Mets debut.
Carrasco's return would be a big boost for a Mets rotation that currently has Noah Syndergaard, Joey Lucchesi, David Peterson and Corey Oswalt on the IL.
