A recent tweet by Advocated for Minor Leaguers followed by a Daily News report put the Mets’ treatment of their minor leaguers under the microscope, and Steve Cohen has responded.

The team owner took to Twitter on Saturday to respond to the report, which revealed that New York deducts 10 dollars per day from its High-A minor leaguers’ paychecks to help cover team hotel costs, which other divisional rivals, like the Phillies, cover fully for their players. The Mets were also called out for having no salary for their minor leaguers in extended spring training, and Cohen responded to the report saying his he will be looking into the issue and will have a response within a week.

“We are looking into this and will have a comprehensive response by late next week,” Cohen tweeted. “This was news to me and want to be thoughtful and not reactive in my actions. We need to examine our treatment of coaches, too.”

Cohen took over the Mets prior to this season, and became the richest owner in Major League Baseball in the process. New York is far from the only organization called out for its treatment of minor league players, as many players share photos of tiny meal portions provided by the team, which already dishes out miniscule paychecks during the season. But Cohen, who made it clear that he wanted to revamp the organization’s farm system when he took over as owner, will have to make improvements to live up to that promise.

“Give everybody a break here,” Cohen tweeted. “People feel strongly about this issue and that is perfectly understandable.”
