David Peterson was originally placed on the IL with an oblique strain, but the Mets now say the 25-year-old lefty has suffered a Jones fracture of the fifth metatarsal on his right foot.
The injury, which takes place near the base of the toe, could require at least six weeks of being off the foot, and recovery could take 6-8 weeks, perhaps on the shorter side if surgery is done to repair it, which Peterson will undergo.
"He was just walking and felt the pop, and that was it," Luis Rojas said. "He was very frustrated. He didn't understand how this could happen."
Peterson was transferred to the 60-day IL earlier on Saturday as a move to free up a roster spot for outfielder Mark Payton, who was acquired for cash from the Reds and assigned to Triple-A Syracuse.
Peterson hasn't pitched since June 30, when he was rocked for six runs on eight hits through three innings of work. In 66.2 innings this season, he holds a 5.54 ERA, though prior to his last appearance, he had enjoyed a stretch of 16.2 innings of two-run ball.
The injury update for Peterson means another starter will be out an extended period of time. Joey Lucchesi's season is already over, while Noah Syndergaard likely won't be ready until September. Spot starter Robert Stock is done for the year as well, while Jacob deGrom and Carlos Carrasco are both on the IL. The Mets had just three healthy starters on their depth chart as of Friday, though that number will increase to four with the necessary acquisition of Rich Hill.
