The Mets had planned to bring Khalil Lee to camp as a non-roster player, but according to GM Billy Eppler, Lee will be headed to the Mets’ minor-league complex when players report there on March 2.
“I talked to the Commissioner’s Office today, and was told we could have Khalil report to minor-league camp on March 2, so he will do that,” Eppler told the media Saturday. “Nothing else to kind of add on that, it’s an ongoing investigation.”
Eppler wouldn’t say if that was a change to any plans, deferring to MLB’s investigation of Lee following allegations he assaulted his former girlfriend while playing for Triple-A Syracuse last May.
Lee was designated for assignment last week after those allegations surfaced, but he cleared waivers and was thought to be heading to Mets camp as a non-roster invitee, as he had a locker at Clover Field and was listed on the team’s list of invites.
The Mets DFA’d Lee on Feb. 6, the reciprocal roster move for claiming RHP Sam Coonrod off waivers from Philadelphia, and the Mets have said little about the investigation, as it is an MLB matter.
“We trust the process and we’re letting it run its course,” manager Buck Showalter said. “It’s not something we want to delve into a lot … from a baseball standpoint we’ll handle it the way we’re told to handle it.”
