After hearing David Stearns' comments on the Foul Territory podcast this week, Evan is resigned to the idea that his beard will be growing throughout the summer and into this offseason.
"I dream that someone is gonna tell me 'Breaking news, seven years $250 million, Pete Alonso is a Met,'" Evan said, though now doesn't believe that dream will come true after Stearns emphasised focusing on this season when it comes to Alonso.
"I'm screwed!" Evan said. "Let me be clear: we're not screwed that he's gone. I didn't get, 'Pete Alonso is gone.' What I took out of it was, my idea that I'm gonna wake up to a Jeff Passan bomb that's gonna allow me…he signs, I cut immediately. What I took out of that though, was 'Go have a monster year Pete, and we'll pay you.'"
That tactic doesn't inspire hope for Evan, as he believes letting Alonso get to free agency opens the door for another team to swoop in with an overpay that swipes the homegrown slugger from Queens.
"As much as you say, 'They'll just match any bid,' all it takes is one owner and one franchise to say, 'I'm not matching that,'" Evan said. "And that's scary."
