As the Mets and Yankees each enter critical offseasons, where both teams could be battling for the same star free agents or trade targets, Evan says it is the first time in his life that he would rather be his Mets than their crosstown foe.
"For the first time in 33 years…it's the first time I go into the offseason, and I feel like I'm better off than you guys," Evan said. "I sort of feel bad for the Yankee fan.
"I trust that my owner is going to spend. Brian Cashman has always had the edge over my general managers and team presidents based on his resume that I've always respected. For the first time, based on his questionable decisions over the past few years, and what David Stearns accomplished with a limited payroll in Milwaukee, I feel like I have the smarter GM. I feel like my GM will do a better job of finding diamonds in the rough than your GM."
Evan believes in Steve Cohen and Stearns, and doesn't trust Cashman to make the right moves anymore, and isn't sold on Hal Steinbrenner breaking the bank this winter. So, he expects the Mets to make the bigger splashes and throw bigger logs on the hot stove.
"If the Yankees and Mets are bidding for Yamamoto, if we're going head to head, my owner has a bigger wallet than your owner," Evan said. "I'm not suggesting that Hal is cheap. What I'm saying is that they are a big market team like the Mets were a big market team in 2002. They'll spend, but there's a limit."
