Evan has noticed the expectations of Mets fans change in recent days, as many now expect to see a more competitive group since the acquisition of J.D. Martinez.
Despite those heightened expectations, and the increased focus on winning in the Steve Cohen era, Evan says it should not be overlooked if New York is able to get to the playoffs in 2024.
"Making the playoffs is a big effing deal," Evan said. "If the Mets are playing October baseball this year, I will be giddy, Mets fans will be giddy, and we will think 'Wow, this is special.'
"Five years from now…I will probably have a very different attitude. I would probably say, 'playoffs?'that is not the bar. The bar is a championship'…we're not there yet. Right now, it is [enough]."
Evan and Tiki believe that the expectations of Mets fans changed heading into last season, and what followed was arguably the most disappointing season in franchise history. With that in mind, and the team's history overall, Evan says a playoff berth this season, regardless of how they get in, should be celebrated.
"Not only when Steve bought the team, but after the 100 plus wins in 2022, we figured we'd be there every year," Evan said. "And then the reality of 2023 slapped us in the face. We all got humbled and remembered who the hell we are, which are losers. And we have a long way to prove otherwise."
