Evan Roberts 'absolutely' would take Jacob deGrom over Justin Verlander or Carlos Rodon

Some Mets fans already seem to be ready to move on from Jacob deGrom, but Evan Roberts is still fighting that idea to the very end, whether that end be with deGrom back in Queens or in another uniform for the first time as a pro.

“Jacob deGrom should finish his career with the New York Mets. Period, stop,” Evan said. “Would you ever consider letting Tom Seaver go if the world was different because of an extra year, because he’s getting old, because I’m not sure what he is? You wouldn’t. And that’s why you don’t get it.”

The alternatives for the Mets are hardly sure things either, Evan noted, so while deGrom has had his share of injuries over the past two seasons, neither of the other marquee free agents have a clean record themselves.

“Justin Verlander, who is a senior citizen, and Carlos Rodon, who has a longer history of being unhealthy than Jacob deGrom,” Evan said. “I’m sorry, I’m absolutely taking the risk on deGrom over Rodon and Verlander. He’s our guy! Why can’t certain people see that?

“I have no guarantee he’s gonna be healthy, it’s a risk you take…Justin Verlander is gonna be old, I don’t trust him to stay healthy either. With a guy who is a career Met, I’m willing to take that risk when the only risk is money, and you have a billionaire owner.”
