Doug in Connecticut called in to Evan and Tiki to float the idea of Don Mattingly replacing Buck Showalter as Mets manager, and Evan had to quickly shut that idea down.
“Why would you want to hire such a terrible manager?” Evan said, before Doug mentioned Mattingly’s years of experience as a manager. “Yeah, he has experience. Experience sucking.”
Mattingly, who finished his playing career with Showalter as his skipper, has 12 years of managerial experience dating back to 2011, when he began a five-year run with the Dodgers. He ended his run in Los Angeles winning 90-plus games in three straight seasons, but the team never got over the hump in October until after he left.
He then managed for seven seasons with the Marlins, logging one winning season, which came during the shortened 2020 campaign.
“Don Mattingly is not a good manager,” Evan said. “I just want to be blunt about it. He was a great player…in a five-year run, he was the best player in baseball, blah blah blah.
“Don Mattingly sucked as a manager. He was not good with the Dodgers. Yeah, they won 90 games, watch him in the playoffs. He’s not a good manager.”
