Evan: When will Mets finally retaliate after constant HBPs?

Yankees reliever Albert Abreu plunked two Mets youngsters on Tuesday night, hitting Mark Vientos before Francisco Alvarez was hit on the hand on a pitch that was eventually ruled a swing for a strikeout.

Alvarez avoided injury disaster, with X-rays coming back negative, but Evan says it’s about time the Mets exact some revenge.

“I’m getting sick of this,” Evan said. “This isn’t anything personal against Albert Abreu or Aaron Boone or the Yankees. They weren’t hitting him on person. But how many times does a team need to get hit, lose guys to injuries - they lost Pete Alonso for a few weeks, and he hadn’t bene the same until five days ago - before you do something about it?”

If Evan were in Buck Showalter’s shoes, coming off a season where they set a record for HBPs in a season, he would have retaliated in the bottom half of the inning after Alvarez and Vientos were hit.

“It’s the ninth inning with a six-run lead, and the Yankees’ best hitters are coming up,” Evan said. “If there is ever a moment to say ‘I am sick and tired of every player getting hit by a pitch,’ this was the moment to do it. As bad as the Mets bullpen has been, a six-run lead in the ninth should be fine.

“This team for the last two years has been drilled constantly. Last year, it was record-setting. This year, it’s been costly. The Pete Alonso injury was costly…I would have done it.”
