Max Scherzer earned his 200th career win in style on Monday night, tossing six perfect innings in a win over the Brewers that, more importantly to Scherzer, clinched a playoff berth for the Mets for the first time since 2016.
Francisco Lindor and the Mets presented Scherzer with a bottle of Ace of Spades champagne as a gift for his milestone, a fitting label for the future Hall of Famer who is part of the best 1-2 pitching punch in baseball.
"We presented to him as an appreciation and as a sign of respect that I have and we all have," Lindor said. "He deserves it."
Lindor also joked that Scherzer has some time to enjoy that gift before his next start.
"He's got five more days," Lindor laughed. "He can enjoy it."
Scherzer was more focused on enjoying what the team itself accomplished on Monday, punching their ticket to the playoffs in his first year in New York.
"I'm happy I did it today," Scherzer said of his 200th win. "We can actually celebrate what we do as a team more than any milestone I can come up with."
