Rob Manfred spoke with reporters on Thursday and said a delayed season would be a “disastrous outcome” for the sport of baseball, but according to Mets superstar Francisco Lindor, the players are willing to risk that in the name of a better deal.
Speaking to SNY’s Andy Martino on Thursday morning, Lindor said that the players are unified heading into Saturday’s next meeting with the owners, as both sides look to agree on a new CBA, but according to Lindor, if the players don’t like the proposal they hear, they will continue to fight for one that they think is fairer, as the scheduled start of spring training inches even closer.
“At the end of the day, we just want a good deal,” Lindor told Martino. “If that’s what it comes down to, we don’t want to do it, we want to play a full season, but if that's what it comes down to, we'll continue to come to the table and bring good things. So we’re waiting. We’re ready.”
The players have been outspoken in their frustration with aspects of the previous CBA, and many have taken to social media to express their displeasure with how the owners and commissioner Rob Manfred have handled the lockout, and the delay before their first proposal. Thanks in part to that delay, the sides remain far apart on certain issues with the season fast approaching, but pressure to get a deal done and avoid a delayed season won’t break the players’ unity in fighting for what they believe is fair.
“We’re very aware of everything that is happening,” Lindor said. “We’re very educated, and everybody is together.”
