The Mets have officially turned to the future after trading away their closer, two aces, and one of their best hitters on the season, leaving the immediate future of the franchise in a bit of uncertainty.
For the veterans that are here for the long haul, like Francisco Lindor, that could be a sobering reality for a team that was expected to contend for World Series titles as soon as he arrived.
But Lindor told reporters on Tuesday that he trusts in the Mets process, and is excited about what the franchise is building with a replenished farm system.
“I'm on board,” Lindor said. “I'm a New York Met and I'm ready to do whatever it takes.
“I’ve always been a guy that’s extremely optimistic. I’ve been on teams that have a lot of good players and didn’t perform to our high standard, and then teams that people didn’t expected us to be in a position where we could win, and suddenly, we sneak up. Nowadays, with the way the playoffs work, 82-83 wins, you can be in the playoffs.”
The Mets likely won’t experience that kind of improbable run this season, having just traded off many of their top assets while facing a monumental deficit in the Wild Card standings, but Lindor is hopeful for next season despite the likely transitory period that the team will be going through. As for 2023, Lindor says it falls on the players that such a sell-off became necessary.
“We as players have to get it done on the field,” Lindor said. “It’s disappointing we’re in this position now where we have to see teammates go, but I’m looking forward to what the future is gonna bring.”
