Gio: Max Scherzer has been 'complete, total bust' for Mets: 'Maybe he just doesn't have it anymore'

Gio opened Thursday's show by taking a victory lap he never wanted to take.

But, as he has said all along, Max Scherzer had the look of the next Tom Glavine for the Mets, and Wednesday's disastrous return from suspension did nothing to disprove that assertion.

"The Mets yesterday, just pathetic," Gio said. "This is an 'I told you so' that I didn't want to say, but Max Scherzer was awful yesterday, he is Tom Glavine 2.0. He has been a complete and total bust.

"Right now, what you saw from Max Scherzer in the biggest moments last year, he was terrible. Beginning of this year: terrible. Suspended for sticky stuff, then coming back: terrible, against one of the league's worst teams. It is a major problem."

Scherzer, just a few months away from turning 39, holds a 5.56 ERA on the season, which would be the worst mark of his 16-year Hall of Fame career. Given his age and recent production, Gio says it's fair to wonder if the all-time great has reached the end of the line.

"Maybe he just doesn't have it anymore," Gio said. "At some point, these guys stop playing well…that could be what's happening right now. He can also figure it out, but what we've seen so far has been alarming."
