Gio: Mets can't seem to escape 'ugliness' after report of Billy Eppler, Buck Showalter feud

As the Mets enter a crucial offseason, the first with David Stearns on board, the team is dealing with reports from the New York Post of Pete Alonso hiring BorasCorp to prepare for a potential free agency next year, and Billy Eppler and Buck Showalter feuding over Daniel Vogelbach’s playing time.

Gio once again needed to address New York looking like a mess, which he thought was over.

“They just cannot get away from ugliness…it never stops,” Gio said.

On the bright side, Showalter seemed to acknowledge that Vogelbach wasn’t cutting it in 2023, but he also has been let go, so there’s that.

“Thank God someone was seeing that he sucked,” Gio said.

“I wonder how we’re gonna be thinking of [Stearns] in a couple years. Is he gonna be out Theo Epstein…or is he just gonna be another infection in the front office?”

Then there is the Alonso discussion. Will he get an extension? Will he test free agency? Will he be traded? If it’s the latter, both Boomer and Gio would think it’s a terrible move.

“Trade a guy that hits 45 and knocks in 120 runs a year,” Boomer said sarcastically. “Yeah, trade that guy, who has been the face of the franchise.”
