Gio not interested in Mets regular season after 2022 finish: 'Tougher to enjoy that ride'

Baseball fans are getting excited for the 2023 season, particularly in New York, where both the Yankees and Mets expect to be contenders after strong performances in 2022.

But for Gio, because of how 2022 ended, and many seasons prior, you can just wake him up when September ends.

"For me, I've seen everything, but them win a World Series," Gio said. "I've seen great regular seasons and terrible regular seasons…I've seen them make the World Series and lose…the only thing I haven't seen is that World Series. So for me, that's what matters. It's tougher for me to enjoy the ride.

"I don't want to say I'm not excited, but whatever happens in the regular season, as long as they make the playoffs, I don't care….get into the postseason somehow, someway, and be as healthy as possible when you do it. Whether you win 115 games or 89 games and get in as a Wild Card. Doesn't mean anything to me."

Last year, Gio saw the Mets win 101 games, only to concede the NL East to Atlanta before bowing out to the Padres in the Wild Card Series. For Gio, seeing his team win just one playoff game after months of promised only enhanced his belief that he doesn't need to tune in until October.

"You're leading the division the entire year, you got swept by the Braves in the most important series of the regular season, and then you get killed in the Wild Card round," Gio said. "For me, I'm not gonna really get into it until the postseason.

"I'm not saying everybody has to feel the way I do about the Mets, but after the way last year ended? Yeah."
