Matt Harvey announced his retirement from baseball on Friday morning, and Boomer and Gio were on air to react to the news.
For Gio, Harvey’s retirement meant the end of a chapter in Mets history that feels unfinished, though it certainly was eventful.
“A complicated legacy that he left,” Gio said. “But at his best, he was a thrill to watch, and someone the fans absolutely loved…he was as exciting as it got.
“It’s unfortunate things didn’t work out in the World Series, and he was never the same after that…I just wish it could have lasted longer, and I wish he got to be part of a championship team.”
Gio longed for Harvey to get a ring after his heroic performance in the 2015 Fall Classic, especially in game five, when he carried a shutout into the ninth inning with New York facing elimination. Of course, his Mets tenure went downhill after that, but prime Harvey was still a sight to behold.
